The first Repairman Jack book was never intended as such. Rather it was written as the second book of The Adversary Cycle. In fact, there was a 14 year gap between this first RJ novel and the second, Legacies.
In August 1998 a revised edition of The Tomb was released updating the time frame of the setting in order to ‘explain away’ why Jack hadn’t aged over the 14 years since the stories first release. This is sometimes referred to as the “Author’s Definitive Edition”. All post-1997 releases contain this “revised/updated” text.
As if that wasn’t confusing enough, in 2004 the is updated/revised edition was also released under F. Paul Wilson’s original title for the book, Rakoshi.
